JD Vance announces the birth of his fourth child

Tuesday, July 21. JD Vance, the vice president of the United States, has announced the birth of his fourth child, a boy. Named Alec Neel Vance, the newborn arrived Sunday morning. The announcement came from the politician himself, through a message posted on social media.

The child's mother is his wife, Usha Vance.

A first in more than 150 years

According to the Associated Press, it is the first time in more than 150 years that a child has been born into the family of a sitting American vice president. Children had been born to vice presidents in the past, but the event had not occurred during the term itself for a century and a half.

In the statement, JD Vance said his wife and the baby were doing well. "Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother," he wrote.

The vice president also thanked the military doctors and staff at Walter Reed Medical Center, the facility where his family was cared for, for the treatment they provided.

Usha Vance grew up in the working-class suburbs of San Diego, California. She is the daughter of a mechanical engineer father and a molecular biologist mother, both of whom came from India to settle in the United States.

The couple met in 2010, while both were studying at Yale Law School. They had crossed paths in a single discussion group whose conversations centered on "social decline in white America".

With this newborn, the family now has four children. The couple already had three before this birth: Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4.

JD Vance has held the vice presidency of the United States alongside President Donald Trump since they took office in January 2025. Before his political career, he became known as the author of the autobiographical memoir Hillbilly Elegy, published in 2016 and adapted for the screen, before being elected senator of Ohio in 2022.
