Nineteen-year-old Jay Alderete says he has no second thoughts about the post-fight chaos that erupted after he finished Cameron Smotherman at Fury FC 121 last Sunday.
Alderete choked the UFC veteran unconscious in the second round after landing a clean head kick to move to 6-0 as a professional. After the stoppage, the undefeated prospect continued jawing at Smotherman and threw a D-X crotch chop, which prompted the former UFC fighter to rush back toward him. Security intervened and eventually multiple officers had to carry Smotherman from the cage. The scene went viral across social media within hours.
What sparked the Fury FC 121 chaos between Alderete and Smotherman
According to Alderete, Smotherman had talked trash about him throughout the build and dismissed the hype around the teenager. After holding Smotherman unconscious for several seconds, Alderete said he was feeding back the energy he received. He told MMA Fighting he ran up to remind Smotherman of a face-off prediction. Smotherman crashed out, tried to rush back into the cage, and fans began throwing drinks and ice. Alderete watched it escalate and thought things were about to turn into a full riot.
Smotherman claimed after the bout that he absorbed seven fouls including five low blows, a headbutt, and an eye poke. Two groin strikes were clear enough that Alderete lost a point in the second round before the finish. Alderete acknowledged those two shots but denied the rest, suggesting Smotherman was stalling for time or hoping for a disqualification. He pointed out that the finish came by choke and head kick, not a foul.
Alderete also addressed accusations from UFC bantamweight Adrian Yañez, who wrote on social media that the prospect had been disrespectful to Smotherman's mother. Alderete denied ever interacting with her and said he was responding to fans and cornermen on Smotherman's side who were gesturing at him during breaks in the action. He said Smotherman reached out to him the next day with heated messages, threatening a rematch and insulting his team and family. Alderete told MMA Fighting he is focused on reaching the UFC or Dana White's Contender Series and called Smotherman a stepping stone. If a rematch happens, Alderete said it would have to be in the UFC. As for Yañez, the teenager said he would welcome a debut fight against the Houston veteran who criticized him online.
