Politically outspoken Spanish Oscar winner Javier Bardem on Sunday spoke not only of his pride in Spain’s second World Cup triumph, but also in the way the team’s players handled Donald Trump during the trophy presentation.
Trump was accused of once again trying to make the moment all about himself after remaining onstage and having to be gently guided away from the players, as they appeared to wait to hoist the trophy into the air, by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Speaking with Zeteo’s Mehdi Hasan after the game, Bardem suggested Trump “wanted to be in the picture.”
“But it was great,” he continued, “how these players who was looking at him like, ‘No, we have to make the picture without you and until you leave we’re not taking the picture.’”
“So he had to leave and I was very proud of that as well,” added Bardem, who is married to Spanish movie star Penélope Cruz.
Hasan suggested it was “almost like an old people’s home where Infantino had to come guide this elderly doddering, maybe dementia-clad man” in the right direction. Trump’s mental acuity has come under increasing scrutiny in recent months. The president has not been diagnosed with any such condition.

“Although many would argue it was classic, cynical Trump trying to make it all about himself,” he added.
