Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) appeared irritated at Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, during congressional testimony over the Iran war Tuesday as the Trump administration asks for more taxpayer money to fight its war.
Asked whether Iran may try to impose a toll on the Strait of Hormuz if the U.S. simply packed up and left, Caine demurred.
“This is as serious as four heart attacks and a stroke,” Kennedy said.
“What’ll happen, Pete?” Kennedy said, turning to Hegseth. The defense secretary said Iran would likely impose a “toll” or “fee.”
Kennedy then asked about Iran’s intent to resume nuclear enrichment, prompting Hegseth to praise Trump’s action in Iran — and prompting Kennedy to lose patience.
“Guys! We need straight answers. We need straight answers. Do we have the ability to destroy whatever is underneath Pickaxe Mountain?” he asked.
“A lot of our capabilities are classified, but if anybody in the world can reach anything on God’s green Earth, it’s the United States military, the most powerful military in the world,” Hegseth said.
