First-ever double-elimination state softball tournament begins at Rogers Park.

For the first time ever, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union State Softball Tournament will feature a double-elimination format, with all 40 teams in action over 20 games in five classes from Rogers Park in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Monday features opening round games, with nobody getting eliminated. All of the action will stream live on the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union official website and YouTube Channel.

Starting Tuesday, teams will meet in elimination games, with the field being dwindled down from there. More games are set for Wednesday, with two championship games set for Thursday and three on Friday.

Class 2A and Class 4A will play championship games on Thursday while Class 1A, Class 3A and Class 5A finish up the week on Friday.

High School On SI Iowa will be providing updates throughout the day from all five diamonds of the tournament, along with recaps and results from each contest.

Cinderella Cardinal Up Early

After earning a Class 2A regional title as an unranked team, Cardinal has jumped out early on top-seed Grand View Christian.

Summer LaRue has two hits and Mavryn Hickenbottom a pair of RBI as Cardinal leads Grand View Christian, 4-1, in the fifth.

No. 1 ADM Up Early On Burlington

The Class 4A top-seed, ADM, has opened up a 5-1 lead on Burlington in the fourth. Lauren Hagedorn with two runs scored and three strikeouts inside the circle.

Cardinal Finishes Off First Upset Of State Tournament

Maclain Hickenbottom struck out nine and unranked Cardinal stunned top-seed Grand View Christian in the first game of the tournament, 4-3. The Comets will take on the winner between Iowa City Regina Catholic and Hinton in the Class 2A tournament on Tuesday.

Mavryn Hickenbottom plated two runs with a double, as Summer LaRue added a double for Cardinal. Sophia Brown and Kolbi Saner each drove in a run.

No Trouble For Top-Seeds ADM, Williamsburg

Kinzee Maxwell homered and drove in four runs on two hits, leading ADM to a 10-1 victory over Burlington in Class 4A play. Lauren Hagedorn had two hits and scored four runs, pitching a five-hitter with four strikeouts.

Elliotte Von Roden and Ellis Smith each scored two runs, with Smith adding an RBI.

For Burlington, Kylee Hill had an RBI.

Taylor Sanchez drove in five and Clarissa Suhr hit a home run as three-time Class 3A defending state champion Williamsburg pounded West Liberty, 15-1 in four innings.

Makenna Cooper added four RBI and Jersey Metz had three, pitching three innings with four strikeouts.

Quick Start For Waukee Northwest In Class 5A

Sophia Schlader hit a screaming double to get Waukee Northwest going in Class 5A play vs. Pleasant Valley, as the Wolves lead 4-0 in the third.

Alayna Schulte has two hits, as four different players have driven in a run. Schlader with four strikeouts already among her eight outs.

All Tied Up In Class 1A

Riley Miller’s two-RBI hit to shallow left-center has tied a Class 1A contest up at 3-all between top-seed Exira-EHK/Audubon and Edgewood-Colesburg. Star pitcher Rachel Egleseder with 12 strikeouts through five innings for the Vikings.

Addi Day!

Addi Schmelzer have a day! The sophomore hits her second home run of the game, putting Edgewood-Colesburg back on top, 5-3, in the sixth. Schmelzer did not have a home run entering the day.

Another Top-Ranked Team Suffers Early Loss

Exira-EHK/Audubon became the second top-seed to go down, as they fell to Edgewood-Colesburg, 6-3. They can still rally back with the double-elimination format this season.

Rachel Egleseder tied a Class 1A state single-game record with 15 strikeouts, as Addi Schmelzer blasted two home runs and drove in three for the Vikings. Chloe Everett also had a pair of RBI.

Riley Miller led Exira-EHK/Audubon with three hits and three RBI.
