New details are coming to light about the fatal crash that killed late actress Kaylee Hottle.
On July 21, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office shared new information about the single-vehicle collision of a 1995 Honda Accord, which took place in the 11400 block of Windsor Road in the town of Ijamsville, Maryland.
Authorities’ preliminary investigation into the crash determined that a 19-year-old man from Frederick was driving the vehicle with two other passengers in the early hours of July 21. The car was traveling down a two-lane road when it drifted off the right side and struck a culvert.
“Excessive speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the collision,” a release from the sheriff’s office read.
The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office and the Division of Fire and Rescue Services both responded to a report of the crash at 2:52 a.m.
In the crash, the driver sustained “injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening,” while one of the passengers declined medical care at the scene. The second passenger, 18-year-old Kaylee, was transported from the crash scene to a nearby trauma center and was later pronounced dead.
Kaylee’s father, Joshua, confirmed her death to TMZ, which was first to report the news. Joshua later posted a video to Facebook explaining what happened to his daughter while using American Sign Language. In the caption of the post, he wrote, “I am taking a flight that I never would like to take,” and said he was traveling from Texas to Maryland to claim his daughter’s body.
A resident of Kyle, Texas, Kaylee was best known for her role as Jia in the last two Godzilla x Kong films.
Kaylee and both of her parents are Deaf individuals, per The Houston Chronicle. Kaylee had been attending the Texas School for the Deaf, which shared a statement following the news of her death.
“Our hearts are with Kaylee’s family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew and loved her during this incredibly difficult time,” the school shared in a post on Facebook. “At this time, we have very limited information and ask that everyone respect the privacy of Kaylee’s family and refrain from sharing or speculating about the circumstances surrounding the accident.”
Speaking to the Houston Chronicle, Kaylee said her career launched when she appeared in an ad for the ASL translation app Convo in 2017, which the Kong: Skull Island producers saw. They said Kaylee “matched the character description” for Jia, who bonds with King Kong using sign language.
She later starred in Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021 opposite Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Brian Tyree Henry, Eiza González and Rebecca Hall.
