The Incredibles are headed back to the big screen in two years' time, and plot details about the hotly anticipated third film are finally starting to emerge. However, the creative team behind the film will be taking it in a direction that may disappoint some fans of the series. They'll be able to see for themselves when it hits theaters on June 16, 2028.
The series kicked off in 2004; written and directed by Brad Bird, the film was the first Pixar film to focus on a primarily human cast, and became an enormous hit with both critics and audiences, winning the Best Animated Feature Oscar and becoming the fourth-highest grossing movie of 2004. The sequel was even more successful, raking in $1.2 billion dollars at the global box office and becoming Pixar's highest-grossing film until Inside Out 2 dethroned it in 2024. The third film, which will be directed by Peter Sohn (Elemental), was announced in 2024.
There's one thing you can't expect from The Incredibles 3 when it hits screens in 2028, and that's a significant leap forward in the character's lives. In a recent interview with The Direct, Bird, who will write but not direct the third installment of the series, threw cold water on the notion of a time jump when asked. He argues that the characters of the franchise represent certain archetypes of the stages of life, and that aspect of the series would be lost if the characters were aged up. Says Bird, "People just keep thinking that aging them up is going to make them somehow hipper or cooler, or more like them, and it's like no, it won't." It certainly wouldn't be out of line with the franchise: The Incredibles 2 picks up moments after the conclusion of the original film, even though it was released 14 years later.
Who Are 'The Incredibles'?
Inhabitants of a retro-styled 1960s where superheroes were prevalent before being outlawed by the government, the Incredibles are a family unit consisting of retired vigilantes Bob and Helen Parr (Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter), alias the super-strong Mr. Incredible and the pliable Elastigirl, and their three children: invisible teenager Violet (Sarah Vowell), speedy preteen Dash (Spencer Fox and later Huck Milner), and unpredictable infant Jack-Jack. After being drawn back into action alongside family friend Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) by the villainous Syndrome (Jason Lee) in the first film, the sequel sees the family recruited by a pair of wealthy siblings (Bob Odenkirk and Catherine Keener), who may have their own agendas.
