Tom Hiddleston has carved out a name for himself as one of the biggest stars in the MCU thanks to his enduring performance as Loki. While Hiddleston has been playing the God of Mischief for more than 15 years now, he’s also taken on plenty of other challenging roles, and he’s always on the hunt for a new movie or TV show to expand his filmography. Before he returns as Loki in Avengers: Doomsday this year, Hiddleston will star in and executive produce a new docuseries with Loki executive producer Kevin R. Wright, which launches on Hulu and Disney+ tomorrow, July 23, courtesy of National Geographic. For those who don't want to wait that long, the new epic also premieres tonight on National Geographic's television channel.
Hiddleston and Wright are reuniting for Pompeii: Out of Time, which is a blend of a cinematic scripted drama and an investigative documentary that transports audiences to ancient Rome in the hours before and during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. With stories from real archaeologists, historians, geologists, and disaster experts, Hiddleston discovers remarkable evidence that challenges long-held assumptions about Pompeii during its final hours. Using cutting-edge historical discoveries, expert analysis, and intimate storytelling, the show reframes Pompeii as a human drama of resilience, a refreshing juxtaposition to the often destructive story of Pompeii’s final hours.
Hiddleston also sat down with Collider’s Maggie Lovitt for an episode of Collider Behind-the-Scenes to talk about the show, including his experience going to Pompeii as a 17-year-old during the summer of 1998. He admits that making this series now gave him a “more mature understanding of time and a more keen awareness of the brevity” of his own life. He also described the show as a “two-way street into the past,” allowing us to tell stories about the past that help us understand things in the present. He even confirmed he used the series as an opportunity to educate people on just how much of modern society is inspired by and based on ancient civilizations, be it our systems of thinking, language, politics, social organization, morality, architecture, and more. Both the interview and the new series are a must-watch for fans of Tom Hiddleston and history buffs.
What Is ‘Loki’s Role in ’Avengers: Doomsday’?
The events of the Loki Season 2 finale set up the former God of Mischief to be a major player in Avengers: Doomsday, the first Avengers film since 2019. Fans will remember that Loki originally died in Avengers: Infinity War, but a slip in the timeline in Avengers: Endgame one year later allowed him to return for two seasons of Loki on Disney Plus. As a reborn hero with a much stronger moral compass, Loki will certainly have a vested interest in stopping Doctor Doom (played by Robert Downey Jr) from bringing destruction to the multiverse. There also may be a reunion there with his brother, Thor (Chris Hemsworth), which would certainly be one of the most emotional moments of the film.
