Idaho Falls police arrest man for attempted rape and strangulation

IDAHO FALLS — A local man has been accused of breaking into a woman’s home and attempting to sexually assault her.

Tyler Humphries, 39, has been charged with one charge of attempted rape, one charge of attempted strangulation, one charge of domestic violence-battery and one charge of burglary; all felonies. In addition, Humphries has been charged with misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor possession.

Police records state Humphries allegedly broke into the victim’s home at around 3 a.m. on July 16. The victim told police she awoke to find Humphries standing over her with his pants down.

Humphries told the victim he “was going to rape her until she told him the truth,” documents allege.

The victim told police Humphries got on top of her and attempted to sexually assault her. When the victim tried to scream for help, Humphries allegedly covered her mouth and grabbed her by the throat.

The victim managed to escape Humphries and reach a child’s room, according to the documents. The child wrapped a blanket around the victim before confronting Humphries. During the confrontation, documents allege Humphries threw the child against a wall.

Humphries reportedly left the residence soon after.

Officers from the Idaho Falls Police Department responded to the scene and noted bruising on the victim’s upper thigh, and the victim complained her throat “hurt and felt like it was burning,” documents state.

The victim was transported to the local hospital, where she was given an examination. Doctors noted her throat muscles were tightening, and the victim had to be given muscle relaxers to keep her airway from closing.

Humphries reportedly briefly returned to the home the next morning. When Humphries returned again around 10 minutes later, the officers arrested him on an unrelated warrant.

During the arrest, Humphries was allegedly found to be in possession of 4.7 grams of marijuana as well as a glass pipe that the police documents state is most often used to smoke narcotics such as methamphetamine.

During interviews with police, Humphries allegedly first told police that he had tried to enter the victim’s bed to “cuddle” but later admitted to assaulting her.

Humphries has not yet been appointed a public attorney, and no bond is yet posted.

If found guilty, Humphries may face up to 52.5 years in prison and may be required to pay a fine of up to $163,000.

Humphries is set to appear in court for his preliminary hearing on July 31 with Magistrate Judge John Dewey.

Although Humphries has been charged with a crime, it does not necessarily mean he committed it. Everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
