As a fashion writer, I’m always monitoring what celebrities are wearing. Every so often, I spot a jacket, top, or sneaker that I can’t get out of my head, which is exactly what happened when I spotted Kendall Jenner wearing Alo’s Sunset Sneaker last summer. I love shoes — and have at least 30 pairs to prove it — so I was eager to see a new style from a brand I already wear and love. However, after looking at the dozen low-profile sneakers already scattered across my floor, I paused on purchasing another.

I felt a bit like Cinderella when I first slid on the mules because they fit me like a glove. Alo (and many reviewers) recommends sizing up, but I found my usual size 9 fit well. As someone with wide feet, I love that the two sets of laces let me customize the fit in both the arch and the top of my foot, so my toes don’t pinch. 

The star of the show is the recovery foam insole, which contours to my feet and makes me feel supported with each step. Similar to running shoes, this pair feels sturdy and cushioned — without the bulky appearance, making them ideal for summer outfits. Even better, since the mule exposes my ankle and the top of my foot, it creates the illusion of longer legs. At 5-foot-3, I appreciate every boost I can get. 

When I first saw these on Alo’s website, I thought I’d wear them to run errands and to and from workout classes, but I’m surprised by how often I reach for them when wearing skorts, shorts, and even sundresses. The suede exterior and double laces add texture and dimension to my looks, while feeling as comfortable as house slippers — I truly feel like I’m walking on a cloud. 

I’m far from the only fan of the new sneaker mules. One person called them the “perfect shoe” for date night or “a slip of class during the day.” They added they were “flooded with compliments” from the first time they wore them, which I experienced as well. Another customer said they’ve “worn them more than any other shoe” they own because they’re so soft and flexible, while a third reviewer praised them as an “all-round winner” that they can “walk miles” in.
