After a milestone World Cup halftime show, many would expect the A-list musical acts to score a major payout.
But in reality, Madonna, Shakira, Burna Boy, BTS, Justin Bieber and the rest of the global group of artists got paid a whopping $0.
Indeed, Global Citizen x FIFA—a charitable effort aimed at unlocking access to sports and education for children worldwide—confirmed that none of the artists who performed at the FIFA World Cup Final halftime show on July 19 were paid.
Instead, the musicians were content to be a part of history, as they will be remembered for helping to introduce this American tradition to the world’s favorite sport. Before Spain sealed their fate as World Cup champs—beating Argentina with a score of 1-0—the artists came together to deliver a truly global show.
To kick things off, Madonna, 67, drove into the stadium performing her track “Music,” alongside Brazil national team legends Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. Taking up the torch, BTS—whose members include Jimin, Jung Kook, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM and V—sang their explosive hit “Dynamite.”

After a brief interlude from Ted Lasso stars Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt to tee up Justin Bieber, he slowed down the tempo with his soulful tune "Everything Hallelujah." Next up, Shakira brought out Burna Boy for a rendition of their song “Dai Dai," with support from dance troupe Ghetto Kids, before passing it off to the children’s choir PS22 Chorus, who were accompanied by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin—the curator of the mid-game event.
And not only were the performances historic, but they also helped raise money for a good cause, as a dollar from every World Cup ticket sold went to charity.
“A FIFA World Cup first, the Halftime Show supports the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund,” the organization previously announced in a May 14 Instagram, “a landmark initiative working to raise $100 USD million to expand access to quality education and football for children around the world.”
