On the surface, the move was motivated by a desire to join his brother Matthew. But there’s another crucial factor at play here: The desire to win a Stanley Cup.
Yes, Matthew Tkachuk already has two rings. But Brady doesn’t. And that’s why it seems that there’s a genuine wish to make that happen.
However, Senators fans should be relieved to know that history isn’t on the Tkachuks’ side.
An interesting study published in Canada Sports Betting revealed that no elite brother duo in the NHL has ever won a Stanley Cup.
Yes, there have been other sibling couples who’ve done it. But they wouldn’t be considered at the same level as Brady and Matthew Tkachuk.
It’s worth noting that the last brother duo to win a Cup was Scott and Rob Niedermayer with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007. However, they really weren’t an elite duo, even if Scott became a Hall of Famer. Rob, however, wasn’t really a high-end player. That’s why this couple doesn’t really count.
The closest any elite brother duo has come to a Cup was Daniel and Henrik Sedin with the Vancouver Canucks in 2011. They came to within one game of hoisting the Cup.
The data showed that 62% of the duos in question actually performed better together than apart. Moreover, of the 10-best seasons by brothers, the Sedin Twins captured five of them. The other sibling pair that managed to make significant headway was Marian and Peter Stastny in the 1980s while playing with the defunct Quebec Nordiques.
Tkachuks could still have good season anyway
The historical data shows that the Tkachuks can still have a good season even if they don’t win a Stanley Cup.
The study projects Brady and Matthew to have the eighth-best season by a sibling couple in NHL history. Their projected numbers are based on last year’s season totals and career averages.
While it would be nice for the Tkachuk's to have good statistical seasons, the fact is that the Panthers’ playoff miss from last season and relatively uncertain future this upcoming season cloud the team’s chances of really contending for a championship.
Who knows, perhaps the Senators will have a chance to foist revenge on the Tkachuks by dumping them in the postseason?
In the meantime, there will be four regular-season matchups in which the Sens will have a chance to show Florida who’s the boss.
