The live-action DC show is set in James Gunn's DC Universe, following the Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart. That said, it will be a detective story in the vein of HBO's True Detective.
Lanterns Is Shaping Up To Be An HBO Must-Watch
Ever since 2011's Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds turned out to be a disappointment, DC has left the Green Lantern Corps fall by the wayside when it comes to adaptations. As such, given how Lanterns focuses on the two most popular human Green Lanterns, Hal and John, and brings other characters from the cosmic side of the franchise, like Sinestro, into Gunn's DCU, the project immediately became one to watch for superhero fans. Lanterns' trailers have shown that the dynamic between the veteran Hal Jordan and the rising star John Stewart will be electric, with plenty of energy constructs flying around.
That said, Lanterns is not a typical Green Lantern story. Instead of focusing on space and different planets, the DC show's main action takes place in a small rural town on Earth. Hal and John will have to unravel a dark mystery in this town, where everything might not be as it seems. Aside from starring Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) and Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) as a duo of space cops in an atmospheric detective series with superpowers, Lanterns' creative team also makes it a must-watch. The new DC series was created by Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Lost), and Tom King (Mister Miracle).
HBO's Lanterns Can Turn The Tide For DC After A Disappointment
The DCU Chapter One started strong with three Gunn releases: Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker season 2. However, the franchise's most recent project, and the first not to be created by Gunn, ended up underperforming at the box office. Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock as the Girl of Steel, has only amassed $116.9 million worldwide thus far. The second movie in the DCU was impacted by negative reviews, holding a low 54% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 353 reviews. The film is going to lose the studio millions due to its reported $170 million budget.
As such, DC Studios needs to bounce back. With everything it has going for the show, HBO's Lanterns emerges as the perfect project to turn the tide. It will be the DCU's first release after Supergirl, and its complex detective story, which takes place across two timelines separated by a decade, positions it to be one of the biggest hits in the franchise thus far. If Lanterns is every bit as good as True Detective, with even more action due to the nature of the Green Lanterns, then it will easily lift the DCU back up.
