Guillermo del Toro, Ari Aster and Kim Novak lined up for doc 'The Fall', investigating Hitchcock's 'Vertigo' finale

Vertigo (pictured above) remains one of Alfred Hitchcock‘s most beloved films. Starring Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak, the mystery thriller about a detective suffering from extreme vertigo as he tails a woman is simply one of the legendary filmmaker’s very best. Now, Variety reports that a two-part documentary from Alexandre O. Philippe (Chain Reactions) titled The Fall is on the way, discussing the finale of the film…and it already has an impressive list of talking heads lined up.

Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth), Vertigo star Kim Novak, and Ari Aster (Hereditary) are set to appear in the film, which will be unveiled at Fantasia’s Frontières as part of a pitch event.

As the outlet notes, “The Fall” refers to the ambiguous finale of Hitchcock’s Vertigo. In it, Judy plummets to her death from the bell tower, yet the viewer is never shown exactly how it happens, and instead is shown 57 frames of Scottie’s face as he watches.

The doc is said to be “structured as a film-noir investigation of the fall and the emotions and ideas it inspires.”

Medianoche Productions is producing the film.

Said Medianoche producer Terri Piñon, “We’re building The Fall as a two-part event, with separate premieres for Part I and Part II, for Vertigo’s’70th anniversary in 2028 that will be the cinephile event of the year. With the cast we’re securing, the French pre-sale, the co-production structure, and early interest from some of the most prestigious festivals, it’s set up for a spectacular rollout to ride the Vertigo anniversary buzz throughout 2028.”

Added Phillipe, “Each version reveals something intimate about the person telling it. It’s the culmination of everything I’ve chased for 20 years: the film I was born to make.”

After watching Chain Reactions, in which Phillipe explores the lasting impact of Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, I know the filmmaker and his cast will deliver a truly fascinating conversation around Hitchcock’s ambiguous finale. Looking forward to taking The Fall.
