For Coree Vas, the Mayo Hotel is more than her workplace. It's where part of her family's story began.
Vas has worked in the hotel's food and beverage department for the past seven years, serving guests in the coffee shop and restaurant. Along the way, she's watched countless weddings and celebrations unfold.
"I get to see a lot of beautiful weddings happen and get to meet a lot of brides and their families," Vas said. "[I love] the commitment that the people are making and how happy everyone is."
But one love story has always stood out above the rest.
Her grandparents spent their honeymoon night at the Mayo Hotel after marrying on June 6, 1942. Just 45 days later, her grandfather left to serve in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was gone for more than three years.
Despite the separation, their marriage endured, leaving behind an example that shaped Vas throughout her life.
"They were teammates," Vas said. "That's what teammates do."
She remembers watching her grandparents build a life together, spending time with family and supporting one another through everyday moments.
Those memories stayed with her.
When Vas married her husband, John, on June 6, 2026, the date was intentional. The couple also spent their honeymoon at the Mayo Hotel, honoring the path her grandparents took.
"Same as my grandparents, 84 years later," Vas said. "It just meant a lot to me because my grandparents mean a lot to me. I felt that it was a special way to be a part of their story too."
As Vas begins her own marriage, she hopes to carry forward the same values she admired growing up.
"Open communication, honesty, loyalty," Vas said. "Be kind to one another. Help each other out."
