Golden retriever's obsession with an octopus was a mystery until her mom remembers something from her puppy days

Golden Retriever's Obsession With an Octopus Was a Mystery Until Her Mom Remembers Something From Her Puppy Days

Goldens are the sweetest dogs.

What do a Golden Retriever and an octopus have in common? Your guess is as good as mine, but in Pacha the Golden Retriever's mind, the two species are the best of friends.

The happy dog recently made her mama (and her hundreds of thousands of social media viewers) emotional when she bonded with an octopus who had washed up on a beach and passed away. She refused to leave her new friend's side, and she even gave it a proper burial. Her mom was stunned and a bit confused to watch this storybook scene unfold, but then she remembered something from Pacha's puppyhood that made perfect sense.

Her new friend looks like her favorite toys! The sweet Golden Retriever has been a fan of octopi since she was just a pup, and she knew exactly what she was looking at when she saw the sea creature on the sand. Somehow, she also knew it was a real octopus and not a toy!

"Make her watch Remarkably Bright Creatures," commented @xxragexkagexx. The movie depicts a surprising friendship between an octopus and an aquarium worker, but I have a feeling Pacha would prefer the real thing over a movie.

I also have a feeling more octopus toys are in her future! This affectionate dog clearly has an affinity for these 8-legged creatures, and I'd love to see her visiting an aquarium to meet an octopus who can move around and even interact with her. After being so respectful to her late friend, this good girl deserves a special treat!

Why Do Dogs Bury Things?

Many pet parents have witnessed their pups burying food to store for later, but what is Pacha doing in this situation? Some commenters like @.redmars are still convinced she plans to "go back and dig it up and eat it later," but others think there's something more beautiful going on.

"But why isn’t the doggo using her paws for this?" asked @quack4o4. This could be her way of being gentle, but it could also be the same ancient canine instinct that made dogs' ancestors bury excess food so scavengers couldn't steal it. Pacha may not see the octopus as food, but she definitely sees it as an item of value.

She's such a good girl!
