Every puppy deserves a safe home and a loving family, but even when that happens for them, it must be a little stressful. They're still brand new to the world, and now they're going to live with strangers in a brand new place? Even if their new home is way better than where they've been living so far, it can be a huge adjustment.
It's possible that no dog has embodied all the feelings that happen on that first night better than the Golden Retriever puppy in the video below. Teddy's sleeping in his new forever home for the first time, and he has some serious feelings about it.
At first, he's looking very sad, like he's pouting big time with that chin on the floor.
"You're sad, aren't you?" his new mom can be heard saying in the background. "You miss your mama and your brothers and sisters and uncles and aunties, don't you?"
That's probably true, but as soon as Teddy hears her voice, he immediately perks up and looks happier. I think it's safe to say he's excited to be home, but just a little bummed at what he had to leave behind. That's totally normal, Teddy. It will get easier!

Your Puppy's First Night Home
Feeling a big mixture of emotions is probably more common for puppies when they first meet their forever families than some might think. It's such an exciting time for them (and us!) but it's also a little scary. Don't forget — they're just a baby!
According to Chewy, here's how you can help your puppy feel a bit more comfortable on that first night:
- Make a comfy sleeping spot for them. A cozy crate will do the trick, along with a bed and toys.
- Clear your schedule. They will want your full attention (and you will probably want to give it to them, because they will be that cute).
- Play with them for an hour before bedtime to help them get all that extra puppy energy out
- Offer positive reinforcement like treats and praise right away to reward them when they do the right thing
- Offer plenty of bathroom breaks — probably more than you think they need!
For some puppies, that first night is really tough, but it does get better. Once they're settled in, things can only get better for you and for them.
