Golfers have learned to shop for driver forgiveness by looking for one number. The higher the MOI, the safer the mishit, at least according to the shorthand that has dominated driver marketing for years.
When I spoke recently with Doug Roberts, Cobra Golf’s vice president of research, development and innovation, and Bryce Hobbs, the company’s head of product line management, neither man was trying to bury MOI or pretend it no longer mattered. Roberts has spent 20 years inside Cobra’s research and development department. Hobbs spent 12 years working on design and innovation before moving into the product side of the business.
The larger point behind our conversation was more useful than another acronym: A driver can preserve speed on an off-center strike and still send the ball somewhere the golfer cannot use.
That distinction sits at the center of Cobra’s 2026 OPTM driver family. Cobra is not attempting to replace Moment of Inertia, or MOI. It is adding Product of Inertia, or POI, to the discussion and arguing that golfers have been using one measurement to answer a more complicated question.
Golf instructors see the disconnect all the time. A player catches the ball high on the toe, produces a respectable ball-speed number and then watches the shot turn hard left. The launch monitor may call parts of the strike efficient. The scorecard only knows the golfer is playing the next shot from trouble.
That is where forgiveness and accuracy stop meaning exactly the same thing.
MOI Never Told the Whole Story
MOI remains one of the most important measurements in driver design. It describes a clubhead’s resistance to twisting around an axis when impact occurs away from the center of the face. A higher MOI can help the head remain more stable, preserve ball speed and reduce some of the penalty created by a poor strike.
None of that has changed.
The limitation is that a golf club does not always rotate around one clean axis at a time. Its shape, center of gravity and mass distribution can contribute to more complex movement when the face meets the ball. Cobra uses POI to describe the combined or diagonal rotation occurring across the clubhead’s axes. The company’s goal is to increase desirable stability through MOI while reducing the multidirectional twisting associated with higher POI.
For the golfer, the engineering language eventually has to translate into ball flight.
Cobra’s argument is that a lower-POI design can reduce the gear effect and curvature produced by certain mishits. A driver would not simply hold onto more speed. It would also have a better chance of producing a shot pattern the golfer can manage.
To pursue that, Cobra used more rounded head shapes, repositioned centers of gravity and weight ports in places that may look unusual compared with the familiar heel, toe and rear configurations found in many adjustable drivers. The company describes the shaping and weight placement as AI-optimized, with each model balancing MOI, POI, spin and the intended player profile differently.
That last part matters. Lower POI is not automatically better if the rest of the driver does not fit the golfer.
Equipment design is always a collection of compromises. Moving mass rearward can increase conventional stability. Moving it forward can lower spin and change how the head responds through impact. Shifting it toward the heel can help some golfers square the face more easily. The best design is not the one that wins a laboratory category by itself. It is the one whose trade-offs match the player standing over the ball.

The practical difference: A driver can retain speed on a mishit without producing a shot that stays in play. Cobra’s OPTM platform is designed to address both.
Cobra’s Four Heads Solve Four Different Problems
The OPTM family includes four drivers: LS, X, Max-K and Max-D. They share Cobra’s POI philosophy, H.O.T. Face construction and FutureFit33 hosel, but they should not be viewed as four versions of the same club.
The OPTM LS is the compact, low-spin option. It has three movable weights, 11 grams, 7 grams and 3 grams, positioned in the high toe, mid heel and rear of the head. Those locations give a fitter several ways to alter center of gravity, spin and directional tendencies. It is the head most likely to attract faster players and golfers who create more spin than they need.
The OPTM X occupies the broad middle of the lineup. Its profile is slightly larger than the LS, and its two movable weights sit in the mid-high toe and rear. Cobra positions it as the combination of speed, forgiveness and accuracy that should fit the widest range of players.
The OPTM Max-K is the maximum-stability head, built with an oversized profile and a fixed 11-gram rear weight. It is the clearest reminder that Cobra is not abandoning high MOI. The company is attempting to retain the stability golfers expect from a Max-style driver while applying its lower-POI shaping ideas around it.
The OPTM Max-D is the draw-biased model. It uses a lightweight, oversized design with a fixed 11-gram weight in the heel area to help golfers who need assistance reducing a slice or closing the face.
That model progression is more useful than ranking the four heads from most advanced to least advanced. They are different tools.
A golfer fighting a persistent slice may gain far more from the Max-D’s heel weighting than from chasing the lowest-spin LS configuration. A player with ample speed and too much spin may surrender distance by choosing the Max-K simply because its forgiveness number looks reassuring.
The number does not know the golfer’s delivery. A fitter has to make that connection.

FutureFit33 Makes the Head a Starting Point
Cobra’s FutureFit33 system provides 33 unique loft-and-lie settings. Both can be adjusted within a range of plus or minus 2 degrees, giving fitters considerably more control over launch, spin, start direction and the golfer’s preferred shot window. Cobra also uses its SmartPad sole design to help maintain a square face-angle presentation across the settings.
That adjustability is not separate from the OPTM story. It completes it.
The head establishes the basic mass properties and performance tendencies. The movable weights, when available, alter center of gravity and head behavior. FutureFit33 gives the fitter another layer of control through loft and lie. The shaft, length, total weight and swing weight still influence what the golfer can deliver consistently.
There are plenty of settings, but that does not mean golfers should begin turning the sleeve until one shot looks better.
A setting that helps one player start the ball closer to the target may send another player farther offline. Added loft may improve carry and control for one golfer while producing excessive spin for another. A more upright lie setting can influence start direction, but it cannot repair every swing pattern or make the wrong head correct.
This is where Cobra’s technology story becomes a fitting story.
FutureFit33 does not rescue an unsuitable head. It gives a qualified fitter more ways to refine the right one.
The useful fitting process should begin with the golfer’s current driver, not with a sales pitch. Establish the existing launch, spin, strike pattern and total dispersion. Test the appropriate OPTM head in a neutral setting. Then adjust one variable at a time and compare the full pattern, including the misses that usually get deleted from a casual launch-monitor session.
The best three drives tell a golfer what is possible. The entire group tells the golfer what the driver is likely to do on the course.

Bottom line: The correct OPTM setup is not the one with the most impressive single drive. It is the one that produces the most playable collection of drives.
What OPTM Is Trying to Give Golfers
Cobra says the OPTM platform can reduce shot dispersion by up to 23%. That number will understandably attract attention, but the larger value of the technology is found in what the company is trying to improve.
Golfers have heard plenty about speed retention on mishits. Cobra is asking them to also consider the shape and severity of those misses. A drive that retains ball speed but curves deep into trouble has not done much to improve the golfer’s score.
The OPTM family approaches that problem through the relationship between MOI, POI, center of gravity and fitting. Each head was developed for a different type of player, and the FutureFit33 system gives the fitter additional control over loft, lie, launch and directional tendencies.
That means the 23% figure should not become another number golfers chase without context. The meaningful test is whether an OPTM configuration produces a better overall pattern than the driver already in the bag.
Does the golfer retain speed more consistently? Are the worst misses less severe? Does the ball start closer to the intended line? Does the player gain confidence because the entire shot pattern becomes more predictable?
Those are the questions that matter during a fitting.
Cobra’s strongest decision may have been resisting the temptation to build one OPTM head and declare it the answer for everyone. The LS, X, Max-K and Max-D acknowledge that golfers create different amounts of speed, spin, curvature and face rotation. A player who needs lower spin should not be fit the same way as someone who needs help controlling a slice.
FutureFit33 expands those possibilities, but it does not make the fitting process less important. It makes a knowledgeable fitter more valuable. With 33 loft-and-lie combinations and several head and weight configurations available, the goal should be to build a driver around the golfer rather than ask the golfer to adapt to the club.
The best three drives in a fitting show what a player can produce. The complete pattern, including the misses, shows whether the driver can actually help.
That is where Cobra’s POI discussion becomes useful. The company is encouraging golfers to think about forgiveness as more than preserving speed. A forgiving driver should also leave more playable second shots.
The scorecard never asks how high the MOI was. It asks where the ball finished and what shot is left.
