With news breaking that the SEC is considering breaking away from the NCAA, Georgia football coach Kirby Smart is addressing those reports. Smart says that actually makes a lot of sense for his league.
“Yeah, I’ve actually been there for a long time,” Smart said, per On3.
There have been many reports this summer that the SEC may try to abandon its alliance with the NCAA. The NCAA has struggled to maintain control over college sports. Things are so bad that even the U.S. Congress is involved in shaping legislation that would regulate college sports.

That legislation is called the Protect College Sports Act. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has said his league doesn’t agree with the bill in its current form.
“People have talked about that,” Sankey said about breaking away, per ESPN. “The frustrations that bring them to the point of saying we should look at something significantly different. I do not believe that is a leverage point. I think that’s honest communication.”
If the SEC should break away, that would have a detrimental impact on the College Football Playoff, NCAA March Madness basketball tournaments, and other events in college sports.
Sankey hopes Congressional leaders listen to SEC officials, who want changes in the proposed legislation.
“If Congress is going to act, we have one opportunity to get this legislation right,” Sankey said. “If Congress passes a bill and it’s signed into law, we won’t be returning to D.C. in a year or two asking and receiving help to correct the gaps that exist. That’s why it’s important these commonsense areas be addressed now before the bill becomes law.”
Reports indicate that the SEC is opposed to provisions in the legislation, that would give conferences the option to pool their media rights. Other proposals include capping how much players can make in compensation.
