Kirby Smart confirmed a critical injury to transfer running back Dante Dowdell.

Kirby Smart confirmed an injury to transfer running back Dante Dowdell on Tuesday at SEC Media Days.

At the end of last week there were rumors circulating that he was involved in a serious ATV accident. Smart did not share anything specifically about his injury on Tuesday, but he did confirm that he is out and it sounds like it will be for a substantial amount of time.

"We're praying for him and his family,” Smart said via 247Sports.com. “We expect a full recovery, but the outlook right now is we're waiting to see. We'll go day to day with him and see. I hate that for him and his family, but he's a great kid. It's been tough. A lot of our players have been over there to see him. It's just one of those really tough situations."

Dante Dowdell’s injury will significant impact Georgia’s run game

Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens are expected to be the top two running backs for Georgia this season. They were dominant last year, so they should be able to lead Georgia’s backfield again this season.

But Dowdell was expected to have a huge impact this season.

He began his career at Oregon before transferring to Nebraska and Kentucky before landing at Georgia this offseason. So far in his career he’s racked up 16 touchdowns, and his 61 rushing yards and one touchdown on just six carries at G-Day this spring had fans really excited for him to take the field this fall.

But this injury will limit him this season. It’s unclear how much time he will miss, but with the season beginning in less than 50 days it feels unlikely he’ll be back in time for the first game of the year. It even feels like there’s a chance he could miss the whole season as well.

Georgia’s running back room is deep enough to overcome this injury, but he will be seriously missed. He was supposed to be Georgia’s big back that would specialize in short yardage situations, but the Bulldogs will now have to go elsewhere in those scenarios.

Smart however isn’t giving up hope that he’ll be back at some point this season, but it’s hard to know exactly what to expect going forward.

The injury bug is not being friendly to Georgia already

Dowdell thankfully hasn’t been ruled out for the season, so there is some hope that he could return at some point. The same however can’t be said for Auburn transfer Amaris Williams.

Williams tore his ACL during spring ball this offseason, and that injury was already ruled to be season-ending. Williams did say that he’s going to do everything he can to come back by the end of the year, but coming back from an ACL tear that fast is unlikely.

Who knows what Georgia did to deserve all of these injuries, but the injury bug is already taking its anger out on them. Hopefully they can survive the rest of the offseason without anything else serious happening, because at this rate their hopes to repeat as SEC Champions will be significantly hindered.
