One of the richest men in the world, Jeff Bezos, could be set to become a stakeholder in Liverpool if these latest reports come through.

The Amazon owner, who is worth over €225billion, is apparently in talks with Amit Bhatia to join his consortium, according to Sky News.

Bhatia is the billionaire son-in-law of steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal. Mittal is the executive chairman of ArcelorMittal, the world’s second-largest steelmaking company, as well as chairman of stainless steel manufacturer Aperam.

The club’s owners, the Fenway Sports Group, confirmed that they are in talks with a party led by Amit Bhatia, with a spokesperson for FSG saying: ‘An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.’

News of Bhatia’s interest in Liverpool came on the same day that the 46-year-old stepped down from the board at QPR to end an 18-year association with the Championship club, transferring his stake to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam.

FSG has owned the club since 2010, when the group bought the club following the failed ownership by George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

FSG bought the Reds for just over €350million, and since then they have won two Premier League titles and a Champions League, with Forbes now valuing the club at around €5.4billion.

Bezos has reportedly had a keen interest in investing in sports for a while now. The Amazon billionaire reportedly had interest in buying NFL franchises Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks, with the Seahawks being reportedly sold to Vinod Khosla and his wife, Neeru Khosla, for €8.41billion.

In 2023, FSG sold a minority stake in Liverpool to investment firm Dynasty, and any deal with Bhatia, should it proceed, is expected to be along similar lines.
