After spending the 2025 season at Kentucky, running back Dante Dowdell was poised to be a part of the running back rotation at Georgia. Kirby Smart revealed on Tuesday that Dowdell will be sidelined for the foreseeable future.
“Dante Dowdell’s situation is tough. I don’t know when he’ll be back. He had an off-campus accident back home during our break,” the Georgia head coach said Tuesday at SEC Media Days. “We’re praying for him and his family and expect a full recovery. But the outlook right now is we’ll wait and see. We’ll go day to day with him and see.”
UGA Sports is among the many Georgia outlets reporting that Dowdell was in an ATV accident this summer. Smart did not disclose the specific injuries and was unable to deliver a timetable on when Dowdell may be able to return to the field.
“It was serious enough that he’s gone from two hospitals, and he’s in our state now,” Smart said. “So, we’re looking for a full recovery and trying to respect his family.”
During Dowdell’s first days at Georgia, he got fans to their feet in the G Day Spring Game. He tallied 69 yards on only seven carries and scored a touchdown.
Georgia is his fourth school in as many years. He started his career at Oregon, then spent a year at Nebraska before transferring to Kentucky. Dowdell split carries with Seth McGowan, rushing 112 times for 560 yards and three touchdowns, including a 79-yarder against Toledo.
