Former New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott, a pivotal part of the 2009 and 2010 AFC Championship teams, was among the on-air ESPN personalities laid off on Tuesday, per Front Office Sports' Ryan Glasspiegel.
ESPN viewers typically saw Scott, an 11-year NFL veteran, on “Get Up.” He also cohosted an ESPN Radio show with longtime New York sports media personality Chris Carlin, who will reportedly have a solo show.
Scott and Carlin famously replaced longtime New York sports radio host Mike Francesa on WFAN in 2018. Their show, which also featured Maggie Gray, only lasted four months in Francesa’s afternoon drive spot before Francesa returned to WFAN that spring.
Scott had not commented on his layoff at the time of publication.
What to know about Bart Scott and ESPN’s layoffs
Although ESPN’s layoffs included both on- and off-air staff, several of the more notable names involved those affiliated with the network’s NFL coverage.
The layoffs began Monday, when former Redskins and Steelers safety Ryan Clark was laid off during “NFL Live.” Management reportedly approached Clark mid-show to inform him of the move because they feared he’d see the news on social media, according to The Athletic's Andrew Marchand.
Clark did not finish Monday’s “NFL Live” episode.
Undrafted out of Southern Illinois, Scott signed with the Ravens in 2002 and immediately became a favorite of Mike Nolan and Rex Ryan. He earned Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors in 2006, recording 9 1/2 sacks and 12 tackles for loss on a 13-3 Ravens team.
Scott followed Ryan to the Jets in 2009 and quickly became one of the team’s most respected and vocal leaders. His passion, especially following victories, made him a fan favorite amid one of the most successful stretches in team history.
Perhaps his most memorable moment came following a stunning playoff upset victory over the Patriots in January 2011. When speaking with ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio, Scott loudly replied, “Can’t wait!” when asked about the upcoming AFC Championship Game in Pittsburgh.
Scott finished his Jets career with 299 tackles, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and 37 TFLs over four seasons.
