Former five-star prospect Cormani McClain enters a critical season at Florida, where many experts believe the once highly-touted defensive back has a chance to emerge as a star in Brad White's secondary.
CBS Sports proclaims the redshirt junior is primed for a breakout campaign; the outlet dubbed McClain "in question" when grading all 32 top prospects from the 2023 recruiting class, but positioned the rating with noticeable optimism.
McClain began his college career at Colorado, where he experienced turmoil on and off the field. After arriving in Gainesville as a walk-on in 2024, he matured from a rarely-used piece of the back-end unit to a six-game starter in 2025 who logged over 450 snaps.
"Now set to embark on his third season in Gainesville, McClain appears to have found his footing both on and off the field, potentially setting up for a fruitful 2026 campaign," writes 247Sports college football writer Cooper Petagna.
At No. 14 on the list, McClain sits below offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor from Alabama, who came in at No. 5 and above Texas transfer and current Kentucky running back CJ Baxter, who was slated at No. 30. The former Lakeland High School standout is the only Gators player to appear on the list with three categories: exceeding expectations, meeting expectations, and in question.
The query for McClain is whether he can sustain the flashes of high-level play that earned him a five-star rating years ago. His fourth collegiate season, and third at Florida, could determine whether he ultimately reaches that potential and revives his NFL outlook.
A peak year for the Sunshine State native could serve as an example of UF's player development success and a testament to McClain's resilience.
