Florida State isn't just upgrading its roster this offseason but the coaching staff as well. Last week, they brought Tom Herman on board, and it was said that he'd be an assistant to head coach Mike Norvell.
As far as the details of that implies, that was unknown, until now. Kolby Crawford of Noles247 broke down the specifics of what Herman will be doing in Tallahassee, and it's very intriguing.
Sources indicate Tom Herman figures to spend significant time working alongside Tony White as an "offensive sounding board for the DC." Essentially stress-testing defensive concepts from an offensive perspective before opponents get the chance to. What would a veteran offensive coordinator like Herman call against a particular look? Where are the vulnerabilities pre-snap?
This is quite the interesting development. Tony White is entering his second year as the defensive coordinator at FSU. Historically, White’s defenses have upped their performance in year two, much like they did when he coached the Syracuse Orange and Nebraska Cornhuskers. So, having Herman assist him in 2026 is very helpful.
Iron sharpens iron, and that's essentially what will be going on with Herman and White. With fall camp approaching, the dynamics of this tag team effort will be unveiled.
