In a league where it can take years to reach the major leagues, youth carries real value. MLB teams often prefer a talented teenager over a 21 year old with a similar skill set. Every program that recruits highly touted players faces the same concern. Will they make it to campus. Texas A&M ran into that roadblock again in the 2026 draft.
On Tuesday, 2026 Texas A&M commit Conner Comeau signed a $2.5 million contract after being selected in the second round of the 2026 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers. Losing one of the best players in the nation is a blow to the fans and the coaching staff, but it is easy to understand why he made the choice.
Comeau is ranked as the No. 55 prospect in the class. He may not be the fastest player, but he more than makes up for it with what he can do in the batter’s box. At only 17 years old, he already shows the traits of a future power hitter with a smooth left-handed swing that projects long term. He can pitch as well, but his future is clearly tied to driving in runs while he settles into one of the corner infield spots.
Texas A&M has built one of the strongest recruiting pipelines in the country, but the MLB Draft continues to test that momentum. Comeau is the latest example of a player whose talent and youth made the professional path too valuable to pass up.
