After being a second-round pick in 2021, former Florida Gators quarterback Kyle Trask may have a chance to play more pro football.
The 2020 Florida Gators were one of the more fun teams the program has had in recent memory.
Former head coach Dan Mullen had an electric offense that could attack you from a multitude of ways. Led by wide receiver Kadarius Toney and tight end Kyle Pitts, they were explosive on offense through the air and on the ground. They finished the season 8-4, but they lost their last three games: the Marco Wilson shoe game against the LSU Tigers, the SEC Championship Game against the Alabama Crimson Tide, and the Sugar Bowl against the Oklahoma Sooners.
The key to the entire team was the play of quarterback Kyle Trask, and he could have another opportunity to play pro football.
Kyle Trask could have a future in Canada
Trask was a second-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2021 NFL Draft, and he was released after training camp in 2025. He spent part of the 2025 season with the Atlanta Falcons but is not currently on a roster.
Not being on a roster going into training camp isn’t great for Trask, but there is still a potential to keep his career going: The CFL, as the BC Lions have added him to their negotiation list.
In the CFL, each of the nine member clubs can add up to 45 American football players to their list where they hold exclusive negotiation rights. Teams can trade those rights to other clubs, something that happened with Johnny Manziel when he had his short stint in the CFL.
Adding him to the list is interesting for a number of reasons, as Trask’s biggest issue is not having a lot of zip on the football won’t be as big of an issue in the CFL. Plus, they are dealing with an injury to starting quarterback Nathan Rourke, who could miss multiple weeks with a shoulder injury.
Trask isn’t a guarantee to sign with the Lions, let alone play. Each team usually has upward of 10 quarterbacks on their negotiation list, and the same holds true with the Lions.

If he did sign with the Lions, Trask could be really good, throwing to Keon Hatcher Sr. and Justin McInnis, but it would take him time to adapt to the game. Playing with the waggle and 12 players on the field is an adjustment, but he has the skill set to thrive.
Will it happen? Who knows, but the door is wide open.
