Multiple rounds of heavy rain and severe thunderstorms are expected to move across northern New Jersey and metropolitan New York on July 21, bringing the potential for flash flooding, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service.
A flood watch is in effect from 8 a.m. Tuesday, July 21 until 2 a.m. Wednesday, July 22 for northeastern New Jersey and New York City.

Forecasters said scattered flash flooding is possible throughout the day and into the evening as storms produce average rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches, with localized amounts of 3 to 4 inches. Rainfall rates could reach 2 to 2.5 inches per hour, increasing the risk of flooding in urban areas, locations with poor drainage and low-lying communities. The greatest flash flood threat is forecasted for northeastern New Jersey and New York City.
High winds forecasted
The Weather Service said severe thunderstorms may also produce wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph, capable of downing trees and power lines and causing power outages. The highest risk for damaging winds extends across northeastern New Jersey, New York City, Nassau County and the Lower Hudson Valley.
Isolated tornadoes possible
Isolated tornadoes are also possible, with the greatest potential in northeastern New Jersey, New York City, Nassau County and the Lower Hudson Valley. Large hail up to 1 inch in diameter could accompany some of the strongest storms.
When does the flood watch end?
Forecasters said the threat of severe weather and flash flooding will begin late Tuesday morning and continue through the evening, with the highest likelihood of impacts during the afternoon and evening hours.
