It has become clear that Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has heard the “MAGA Barbie” moniker that is thrown around online, and she has fired back at it.
Turns out, she might not be a “MAGA Barbie” at all. In an extensive interview with ESPN, Cunningham claimed to be “very much in the middle” of the political spectrum.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,'” Cunningham said, defending herself. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”

Speaking specifically about her political ties, she explained, “I’m very much in the middle. I agree with things on both sides, disagree with things on both sides. And that’s all I’ve ever said about my political beliefs. But people love to assume.”
Fever star Sophie Cunningham’s 2026 season
It has been a busy few weeks for Cunningham, who has been playing games for the Fever and serving as a ring girl for the UFC. Currently, her team is 16-10 and in first place in the Eastern Conference Division.
So far, Cunningham has played in 25 games, starting three of them. She is averaging 9.4 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game.
It is a slight step up from her numbers in 2025. Last year, Cunningham played in 30 games (starting 13 of them) before suffering a torn MCL injury. In that stretch, she averaged 8.6 points per game.
She is in the middle of her second season with the Fever. Cunningham was traded to Indiana as part of a four-team trade before the 2025 season. Previously, she spent the first six years of her career with the Phoenix Mercury, who drafted her in the second round of the 2019 WNBA Draft.
