(NewsNation) — A famous bald eagle is undergoing rehabilitation after being found injured, thanks to viewers of her live camera feed who noticed she had been missing for days.
The bald eagle named Jackie became famous after her nest in Southern California, shared with her partner Shadow, was livestreamed online by the environmental organization Friends of Big Bear Valley.
Since 2018, the livestream has been viewed by millions of people. The mated pair are currently raising two eaglets, Sandy and Luna.
Jennifer Voisard, media manager for Friends of Big Bear Valley, joined “The Hill on NewsNation” on Monday, telling Blake Burman that viewers kept asking about the bald eagle who hadn’t been seen at her nest since July 12.
“We didn’t think she was missing, but she hadn’t been in our view,” Voisard said.
A few days later, Friends of Big Bear Valley started hearing reports of an adult bald eagle at Dana Point Park that had been involved in a couple of fights with younger eagles. The eagle, later identified as Jackie, was then found grounded and unable to fly Thursday. Voisard said this type of behavior between adult and young eagles is normal.
“Right now, the younger bald eagles, they’re looking for food,” she said, “and so their instincts tell them to steal food, and that’s largely how they eat for the first few years of their lives while they perfect their fishing and their hunting skills.”
Jackie is currently being cared for by the Ojai Raptor Center, which wrote on social media that she was “weak and vulnerable” when she was first brought in, but luckily didn’t have any broken bones. The center says Jackie is “receiving outstanding veterinary care from our team.”
As for when Jackie will be back home with Shadow and their eaglets — only time will tell.
“The goal of any kind of raptor release is to do so by the home area and to reunite with the mate if possible,” Voisard said. “All we can do is stay positive and wait for news.”
