NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A 19-year-old woman died, and a man was injured following an early Tuesday morning shooting on I-264 in Norfolk, according to Virginia State Police.
State police responded to a report of a shooting around 4 a.m. on I-264 in Norfolk.
A preliminary investigation determined two individuals in a burgundy Nissan sedan were traveling eastbound on I-264 between Campostella Road and Ballentine Boulevard when their vehicle was struck by gunfire.
The driver, a 39-year-old man, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The passenger, identified as 19-year-old Alexis Styles, suffered fatal injuries.
Styles’ cousin, Lashayla Horne, identified their relationship as stepfather and stepdaughter. Horne said that she was on her way to work at the time of the incident. Styles was a breakfast attendant at an area hotel.
“Brilliant, smart, just want to help, very helpful, she was just different. All she wanted to do is help. She just wanted to work. She wanted to start a family business, first family business,” Horne said.
A vehicle with hazard lights blinking was also blocked off by police tape. That vehicle had a large hole in the front passenger window.
Medics also left the scene shortly after WAVY arrived.
Investigators are requesting anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have information about it to contact Virginia State Police at (757) 424-6850.
