SAN DIEGO (WJW) – Aubrey Birrell and her family say they made an unexpected discovery while on vacation in California: They spotted themselves in a picture that was hanging on the wall inside their Airbnb.
The Salt Lake City woman posted a video to TikTok earlier this month, showing a large canvas in the hallway of the beach-themed Airbnb in San Diego.
“We’re looking at this picture and my dad is like, ‘This looks like me,'” Birrell said, pointing at someone in the water in the photo. She said the photo was taken when they were on a prior family trip to San Diego. “This is my dad, that’s my sister Libby 10 years ago, that’s my brother 10 years ago. They are literally in the Airbnb picture.”
“We have those swimsuits,” her sister said. “We are on the Airbnb wall.”
The family, which has since recreated the photo, believe the original image was shot during a time when Birrell’s brother had soccer tournaments in the San Diego area.
The video has since gone viral, with more than 1 million views on TikTok and thousands of comments, including many viewers calling the situation crazy and unsettling.
“Literally sounds like the start of a horror movie,” one comment said with more than 40,000 likes.
Birrell recently posted another video to TikTok, giving eager fans an update on the bizarre situation, which happened while the family was celebrating her grandfather’s 80th birthday, People reported.
“We reached out to (the host) and they let us know that the decorator is a photographer in California and that they just take aerial shots of the beach,” Birrell said.
The family said they are now trying to obtain a print of the canvas.
