Free DC called for District residents to boycott DoorDash after the company spoke in favor of HR 9720, which advocates say infringes on D.C. Home Rule.

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Free DC called for District residents to boycott DoorDash on Wednesday after the company spoke in favor of HR 9720, which advocates say infringes on D.C. Home Rule.

The bill, called the D.C. Taxing Authority Review Act, advanced through the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday. It would require Congress to approve any tax or fee increases that the D.C. Council passes.

Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) proposed the bill, pointing to many factors, including a new fee that was added to third-party food delivery services such as DoorDash.

Bill aimed at blocking DC from imposing tax hikes advances through House committee

U.S. Shadow Sen. Ankit Jain (D-D.C.) said Wednesday that DoorDash pushed the bill, saying that the company was “actively working with Republicans in Congress to attack our self-governance.”

A post on DoorDash’s website published on July 7 said that the new delivery tax was “failing the District.” The company said that this tax will cost D.C. residents over $3.5 million in additional taxes, cause Dashers to lose over $2 million in earnings and strip local businesses of over $7 million in revenue each year.

In a post on Instagram published Wednesday afternoon, Free DC called for the boycott and called on D.C. residents to email DoorDash representatives, calling for the company to withdraw support for HR 9720, make a public statement against United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal officials “who are hunting and killing delivery drivers” and state publicly that the “DC Safe and Beautiful Task Force” established by President Donald Trump in 2025 should end.

DC News Now reached out to DoorDash for a statement but had not heard back at the time of publication.
