Much like he did in his college career, Brandon Johnson is changing teams, heading across the country from the East Coast to the Pacific Northwest.
The former Oregon Ducks corner signed with the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday, returning to the West Coast for the first time since his days as a Duck ended in the 2025 Rose Bowl. Johnson went undrafted in 2025 and spent most of his rookie season in the NFL on the practice squad for the Philadelphia Eagles. He did appear in three games, making one start, but had a minimal impact.
For his second season in the NFL, Johnson is joining the Seahawks as a depth piece in a secondary room that has enough openings for Johnson to potentially earn a roster spot. He was released by the Eagles last month.
Seattle currently has a pair of defensive backs on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list: Nick Emmanwori and Tyrone Broden. Broden, a second-year player as well, is making the change from wide receiver to cornerback, and if he is unable to participate early in camp, that could be an opening for Johnson to stand out.
The Seahawks also have three rookie corners they drafted coming into camp, as well as veteran Noah Igbinogene, who will be battling for a spot. If Johnson performs well, his experience last season as well as his youth could lead to him being chosen to crack the roster over others.
Johnson was a key figure in Oregon's undefeated regular season in 2024, which led to a Big Ten title. He operated out of the nickel for the most part with the Ducks, collecting 45 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, six pass breakups, and one interception. He also returned a fumble for a touchdown.
Johnson is a sound tackler in space, and that could at least earn him a spot on the roster to contribute on special teams. As many Ducks compete for roles during training camp, Johnson is another one to keep an eye on.
