Ed Harris says he felt 'misled' and 'inconsequential' while making 'Dutton Ranch'

About halfway through filming “Dutton Ranch” season 1, Ed Harris told his team to get him the “[expletive] out of here.”

Harris plays Everett McKinney in the Paramount+ series that wrapped up its nine-episode first season earlier this month. Everett is a weathered veteran and veterinarian who becomes close with Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), and rekindles a romance with Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening).

On the red carpet of his new film “The Dink,” Harris told Variety that he felt “misled” and “inconsequential” about his role on “Dutton Ranch.”

Prior to signing onto the show, Harris said he was told that he’d be one of the four main characters along with Beth, Rip and Beulah. According to him, that wasn’t the case.

“I [told the show’s producers], ‘I’m feeling underused and inconsequential,’” Harris said Monday night. “And they kind of went, ‘Oh.’”

Asked about “Dutton Ranch” season 2, Harris said filming begins in February 2027, and he’s been told that he will have an expanded role this time around.

Harris admits that he did watch the show and thought it turned out “pretty good.” To that end, he felt fine about the work he did and the importance of his character in the show. But, it didn’t feel that way while making it.

“It just was a little frustrating, to tell you the truth,” Harris said.

Another thing that soured Harris was one his scenes being cut.

In episode 2, Harris’ character meets up with Beth and Rip at bar and later is asked to come on stage and sing. Harris walks over and saddles up to the microphone, but the episode doesn’t actually show him performing.

As Harris tells it, a scene was filmed of him performing but didn’t make it into the show because it was too light for the dark ending they planned for the episode. To that dark ending, episode 2 ends with Rip dumping a body in an abandoned mine shaft.

“[Expletive] you people, that’s all I got to say,” Harris told Variety. “That to me was reason enough to say, ‘I’m voiding my contract.’”

“Dutton Ranch” follows Beth and Rip on a new adventure in the fictional South Texas town of Rio Paloma.

Reilly and Hauser reprise their “Yellowstone” roles, along with Finn Little as their adopted son Carter. These are the only returning characters from “Yellowstone,” although there are a few other nods to the series on “Dutton Ranch.”
