TCU heads into the 2026 college football season with a new quarterback, hoping to win its first Big 12 title since the 2014 season.
Jaden Craig transferred from Harvard to join the Horned Frogs after a successful season (2,869 yards with 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions). He will try to replace Josh Hoover, who departed for defending national champion Indiana.
The Athletic ranked all 138 projected FBS starting quarterbacks on Monday, separating them into seven tiers.
Craig was selected as the 38th-best quarterback, placed in tier 4, which the Athletic described as:
“Some of the stars of tomorrow, like inexperienced QBs who coaches believe in but lack a proven resume, and there are also veterans who are looking to redeem themselves and journeymen looking to make the most of their last stops.”
“Craig, a two-time first-team All-Ivy Leaguer at Harvard, is one of the most intriguing quarterbacks in the Big 12. He had draftable grades from NFL scouts and considered going that route before opting to transfer to the Power 4, where he’ll succeed Josh Hoover. His size, arm and smart play (52 touchdown passes, 12 interceptions) drew plenty of interest in the transfer portal.”
Craig was ranked the eighth-best quarterback in the Big 12, with the highest ranking belonging to Oklahoma State’s Drew Mestemaker, who transferred from North Texas. He was sixth overall, placed in the top tier.
Hoover was placed in tier 2 at No. 12 overall as he prepares to try and help the Hoosiers defend their title.
“As TCU coach Sonny Dykes pointed out this offseason, Hoover has a problem protecting the ball - he committed more than 40 turnovers in the past three seasons. Indiana will likely ask him to do less, so it’ll be interesting to see how Hoover cleans up those issues as he steps into the national spotlight. ‘I think (Indiana will) do better with him because I think he made his mistakes when there really wasn’t much to do with the ball,’ a Big 12 head coach said. ‘Indiana’s staff is very good.’”
