Ed Harris returning to 'Dutton Ranch' season 2 after saying he felt 'misled' by his role

Ed Harris will return for Season 2 of Dutton Ranch despite publicly expressing frustration with how his character was handled during the show's first season.

In a Variety interview published July 21, the Oscar-nominated actor said he felt "misled" about the size and importance of his role in the Yellowstone continuation. Around the same time, Deadline reported that Harris had agreed to reprise his character, Everett McKinney, with a substantially expanded storyline under the show's new creative leadership.

Harris plays McKinney, a South Texas veterinarian, in the Paramount+ series centered on Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler following the events of Yellowstone. The franchise was created by Taylor Sheridan.

"Prior to signing on for it, I was talked to quite a bit about what the season was, and what my character was going to do — and that I was one of the four main characters," Harris told Variety. "And that wasn't really the case."

The actor said the material left him "feeling underused and inconsequential." He also revealed that midway through filming, he told his representatives that he wanted to leave the production.

Despite those concerns, Harris is now expected to return as McKinney for the second season. Deadline reported that the character will have a significantly larger role, potentially addressing one of Harris' principal complaints about Season 1.

His return comes amid a major change behind the scenes. Chad Feehan, who served as showrunner during the first season, has been replaced by Benjamin Cavell, whose credits include creating the CBS military drama SEAL Team. Cavell will oversee the series as it moves into its next chapter.

The timing of the two developments helps explain why Harris is attracting renewed attention. His candid criticism and the report confirming his return emerged within the same news cycle, creating the appearance of a sudden reversal. However, the actor's comments concerned his experience making Season 1 and did not necessarily reflect his position after learning about the creative plans for Season 2.

Harris has not personally explained why he decided to remain with the series. Neither he nor his representatives have publicly confirmed the details of McKinney's expanded storyline.

Paramount+ has not announced a premiere date for Dutton Ranch Season 2. Additional information about Harris' role is expected as production moves forward under Cavell.
