Eagles fans were told exactly what they needed to hear about Makai Lemon

Most Philadelphia Eagles fans knew that by selecting Makai Lemon in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, he would be A.J. Brown's "replacement," but how would he be specifically?

Lemon plays a different role from Brown in the offense since he is a slot receiver and Brown is on the outside. Last season, the Eagles had Jahan Dotson in the slot, and he was a non-factor all year. That's where ESPN NFL analyst Mina Kimes believes the rookie from USC will make the biggest impact on the Eagles' offense.

"No, I think DeVonta Smith takes more of the A.J. Brown usage in terms of becoming more of a threat on the perimeter. But Makai Lemon to me is really important because he fills a lot of the gaps that were pretty noticeable last year in the Eagles offense and have been for a while, specifically quick completions against zone coverage and yards after the catch. Last season, on throws under 10 yards, the Eagles averaged 3.3 yards after the catch per reception. That was 31st of 32 teams. And to me, that's where Lemon comes in, making himself very quarterback-friendly target very quickly, and then almost turning into a running back with the football in his hands because of his strength and vision. And I know that doesn't sound super sexy to, you know, fantasy managers or people who think about A.J. Brown, but it is so important. Ryan (Clark), you know this, to keeping that offense running on time and making it more efficient. So I, I see him filling a pivotal role for Philadelphia."

Makai Lemon can be a real threat from the slot for the Eagles in 2026

Lemon was a real threat in the Trojans' passing game last season in college, catching 79 passes for 1,156 yards and nine touchdowns. He won the Fred Biletnikoff Award for being the nation's best wide receiver in 2025.

The Eagles have the size on the outside to replace Brown, thanks to the addition of Dontayvion Wicks via trade in April. Smith will still be the number-one receiver in the offense and be used for a little bit of everything. Another threat in the offense is Marquise "Hollywood" Brown, who will be the deep-threat speed guy.

Where the Eagles need Lemon is not only to get those short completions and turn those into YAC yards, but to be the third-down threat for Philly. Smith will command a lot of attention, and Wicks will be a focal point in the red zone, so that leaves Lemon to be looked at when they need those five to seven yards on the final down before a potential punt or field goal.

Over the years, the Eagles have leaned heavily on A.J. Brown, Smith, and Dallas Goedert, which made their passing offense more predictable. Now, with Lemon, Wicks, and Hollywood Brown alongside Smith and Goedert, defenses will have more headaches about who they need to prioritize covering.

Lemon may not get All-Pro or Pro Bowl caliber numbers in his rookie season, but he has a real chance of being a legitimate threat in this offense.
