Ivanka did not address the ongoing controversy surrounding her and Kushner’s investment in a proposed $1.6 billion luxury resort linked to Albania’s Sazan Island. The project has become the focus of a growing protest movement in Albania. Demonstrators refer it as the “Flamingo Revolution” — that began as opposition to the resort and has since expanded into broader anti-government demonstrations, with protesters carrying pink flamingo balloons as their signature symbol.
Singer Dua Lipa, who was born in London to Albanian parents, this week became one of the most prominent voices to publicly criticize the project. Speaking on her Service95 Book Club podcast, she said she found the Albanian government’s handling of the development troubling. “What I actually find concerning is the principle that the government could just change the law to remove the environmental protection without any kind of public consultation,” she said.
Her comments drew immediate praise from activists in Albania. Human rights advocate Besim Ndregjon wrote that Lipa was contributing “to the freedom of Albanians who are hostages of Edi Rama’s communism.” Environmental advocate Aleksandër Trajçe called her intervention “a breath of fresh air,” adding that her willingness to speak about the project had given protesters “fresh hope and determination.”
“She has chosen to stand on the side of nature, transparency, and the public interest, and I believe history will remember that,” Trajçe wrote.
The birthday posts came days after Ivanka and Kushner were reported to have attended the annual gathering in Sun Valley, Idaho, informally known as the “billionaire summer camp.” Neither Ivanka nor a representative have commented on Lipa’s remarks or the controversy.
