CNN’s chief data analyst Harry Enten broke down one new poll revealing that President Donald Trump’s Iran war should be a massive warning sign for Republicans as the party prepares for the midterm elections.
Enten spoke on CNN News Central on Tuesday, and described the latest polling as “historically unpopular” before he focused on one figure he said stood out above the rest.
“Just a devastating number for Republicans,” Enten said after going through new polling that showed that there is a growing opposition to the conflict, particularly among independent voters.
The political analyst spoke about a recent Washington Post survey that shows Trump’s net approval rating on the Iran war had dropped sharply since the conflict began. Enten said he had searched across many different polls and believed that it is the lowest that it has been since it started.
“I believe this minus 40 points represents the least popular poll in terms of Trump’s net approval rating on the Iran war, the entire war so far,” he said.
And Enten wasn’t even pointing to the single statistic as proof of what he was saying. He instead argued that the broader trend may matter even more than a single survey.
According to the polling he was citing, 68% of Americans now believe the war has not been worth it, while just 28% believe it has. He also said that public dissatisfaction is even higher than attitudes toward the Iraq War during the 2006 midterm election cycle.
“And so this is a very, very bad number for the president,” Enten said. “I think a lot of Republicans in Congress don’t like this number one iota.”
CNN anchor Jon Berman pointed out that back in the 2006 midterm elections, Republicans were shattered with major losses as the opposition to the Iraq War grew, adding that he was surprised attitudes toward Iran had shifted so dramatically only a few months into the conflict.
Enten then pointed to another fact, saying that the biggest concern for Republicans may be where the erosion is taking place.
He highlighted polling showing that 77% of independents now believe the Iran war has not been worth it. Even among Republican-leaning independents, 63% shared that view, and he believed that it could be pivotal for the GOP that these voters are against the war.
“They need these voters. They need these voters. They need these voters,” Enten said as he emphasized how important the independents are in competitive congressional races. “And right now, on the Iran war, they most certainly don’t have these voters.”
Entern’s comments come a few days after there were deadly Iranian strikes that killed several U.S. service members stationed in the Middle East.
President Donald Trump promised on Monday that Iran would pay “many times over” whenever an American soldier is killed. In a Truth Social post, he said the directive had already been passed to Pete Hegseth, who is the Secretary of War, Gen. Daniel Caine and military leaders.
Trump will not appear on the ballot in the upcoming midterms, Enten said that Republicans who are wanting to be re-elected could still face political consequences if the public’s opinion on the war continues to fall.
Enten called the conflict “historically unpopular,” and said that the latest polling shows that things are becoming harder GOP, especially if independent voters are turning away from because of the war.
