Los Angeles Dodgers star shortstop Mookie Betts had a nig night on offense during Monday night’s series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, but his incredible performance was not enough for the reigning World Series champions to avoid a 10-7 loss.
The former American League Most Valuable Player went 4-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs. He lifted a 401-foot solo home run in the seventh inning to trim the Phillies’ lead to 8-4.
He crushed his second homer of the evening in the ninth inning, which drove in two runs to make it 10-7, but that proved to be the final score in the game, as the Dodgers absorbed their second loss in a row. Before the Phillies game, Los Angeles lost to the New York Yankees in a series finale on Sunday.

As noted by Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the shortstops in the contest showed out. Apart from Betts, Phillies star Trea Turner also turned the heat up at the plate. Turner went 3-for-5 with two home runs, two runs scored and five RBIs.
Despite the loss, the Dodgers can take heart from seeing Betts have such a big outing, especially considering the season he is having. Betters entered the game batting just .226/.290/.399 with 11 home runs and 31 RBIs through 63 games.
As for the Dodgers, they remain comfortably ahead of their rivals in the National League West despite their recent stumbles. They are at 63-38, 11 games better than any other team in the division (pending the result of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ game Monday).
