A new generation is introduced in the first look at A Different World, a reboot of the classic sitcom which first debuted in 1987. Nearly four decades later, the show returns with a mix of new and returning cast members with the new Netflix series.
Netflix has dated Sept. 24, 2026, as the premiere date for the new incarnation of A Different World. Primarily, the series follows a new cast of characters as the featured students of Hillman College. However, there are several legacy characters returning as well, including Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy), Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison), Freddie Brooks (Cree Summer), and Ron Johnson (Darryl M. Bell). A new teaser trailer announcing the release date has also been unveiled, and it can be seen below.
A Different World Officially Returns in September
The official synopsis reads, "A Different World returns to Hillman College with a new class stepping onto campus — and beloved faces coming home. At the center is Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), Whitley and Dwayne’s lovingly sheltered youngest daughter, a free spirit with a flair for the spotlight and a big heart who’s still figuring out her own path at Hillman."
"Along the way," the synopsis continues, "she’s joined by a new generation that reflects the breadth of Black life on campus: Rashida Duvall (Alijah Kai), a first‑gen criminal justice major; Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV), a five‑star athlete choosing legacy; Amir Rodale (Jordan Aaron Hall), a sharp psych major better at fixing everyone else’s problems than facing his own; Hazel Henry (Kennedi Reece), a church‑raised small‑town girl defining her own values; and Kojo Achebe (Chibuikem Uche), a Ghanaian‑Nigerian fashion entrepreneur finding the courage to follow his vision."
A New Ensemble Cast Takes the Spotlight
The new A Different World is created by Felicia Pride, who also serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Other EPs include director Debbie Allen, Tom Werner, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Mandy Summers.
“It is such an honor to be a part of bringing back this iconic show, one that I grew up on and which had a profound impact on my life,” Pride said about rebooting the series. “I am so proud of the work we’re doing to reimagine A Different World for beloved fans and new generations alike.”
Allen, who also served as a director of 83 episodes of the original show, added: “There couldn’t be a better time than now to reboot A Different World. Our show changed lives, tripled the enrollment of historically Black colleges and gave a strong voice and platform for Young Black America. The incredible fresh young talent we have discovered paired with the lovable audience favorite OGs makes this much-anticipated return a must-see on Netflix.”
A Different World will start streaming on Netflix on Sept. 24, 2026.
