Deebo Samuel didn't let the "glorified mascot" comment slide.
Earlier this week, ex-NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho argued against the San Francisco 49ers bringing Samuel back, calling him a "glorified mascot" while making the case that San Francisco's roster construction — not talent — was the real obstacle to a reunion.
The comment didn't sit well with Samuel, who fired back directly at Acho on X.
Acho responded quickly, conceding the point. "You right @19problemz .. glorified mascot was wildly disrespectful, apologies," he wrote on X.
Acho didn't stop there. He brought the apology to Speakeasy, going further in explaining where the comment came from and why he regretted it. He said he hated giving a take that crossed a line without realizing it, calling it mean rather than simply wrong, and said that wasn't something he liked doing.
He clarified his original point wasn't about Samuel's ability, but about the energy he brings to a stadium in his style of playmaking — the same idea that led him to reach for the mascot comparison in the first place, a word choice he acknowledged went too far. Acho added that he'd already reached out to Samuel privately before addressing it publicly, framing the segment as a direct, man-to-man apology.
"A mascot gets electricity in the stadium," Acho said. "That's why I said a 'glorified mascot.' So I don't even feel like it was a bad take; I feel bad about the take. Like, it was just mean. I don't like mean."
The exchange doesn't resolve the actual question hanging over Samuel's free agency — whether the 49ers view him as a fit given their receiver depth — but it did put a public bow on a heated back-and-forth between a former player-turned-analyst and the player he criticized.
Samuel remains unsigned with training camps underway, and it's still unclear whether San Francisco is among the teams pursuing him.
