David Muir ignited heartbreak among viewers after her reported on the death of Jurassic Park star Sam Neill on the Monday, July 13, episode of his show, World News Tonight.

The 51-year-old ABC host dedicated a segment on the nightly news program to remembering the beloved Hollywood star, who was announced as having died at age 78 on Monday. David explained on the show that a certain segment was for "remembering actor Sam Neill, famous for Jurassic Park," before he transitioned to showing a montage video of his filmography.

The tribute to Sam on World News Tonight was shared on the show's official Instagram page later on Monday night. The actor's death was announced on Instagram earlier that day. It comes after Muir posted a photo of his "special companion" as he disappeared from screens.

The post's caption explained in further detail: "Actor Sam Neill, best known for the "Jurassic Park" franchise and over 150 film and TV roles, has died at age 78. @DavidMuirABC looks back on Neill's more than five-decade career, including his memorable performance as Dr. Alan Grant in 1993's "Jurassic Park.

Several mourned Sam in the comments, sharing their sadness over his passing with heartfelt messages. "This hurts so much, not only because he was a great actor but he loved Nature and animals, I used to watch his videos here in Instagram," one commenter wrote.

Another shared, "Deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers are with the family of Jurassic Park star Sam Neill, who has passed away at age 78. As the legendary dr. Allen Grant, this incredibly cinematic, charismatic, and talented actor awed audiences for decades..." A third explained, "This loss feels too great. We love you, Dr. Grant," while one other expressed, "True LEGEND!!! RIP!!"

Sam's death was announced in a statement posted to his Instagram page, with the message reading: "It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia."

Although his cause of death hasn't been shared, the statement confirmed that Sam had "remained cancer free." Sam had suffered a five-year battle with stage-three blood cancer. However, he announced in April he was cancer-free after undergoing a new treatment when chemotherapy failed.

The Instagram statement added, "Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life. The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free. They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care.

“More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss."

It comes as Muir's surprising salary was revealed following his ABC career.
