New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani broke his silence on President Donald Trump praising him as “handsome,” a compliment he has given to a number of male public figures.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, sat down with Rolling Stone for a lengthy interview on some of the most pressing issues of his administration, including his relationship with Republican President Donald Trump. Last month, the president referred to Mamdani as a “charming guy, good-looking guy.”
“I, uh… thank you?” Mamdani replied as he laughed when asked about his reaction to Trump’s compliment.
Users on social media were quick to laugh at the awkward interaction, with some trolling President Trump for his apparent affection toward his political opponent.

“Lol that’s gotta be awkward but nice of him anyway,” one user wrote on X.
Mamdani is far from the only political foe Trump has called beautiful. While the president has a penchant for coming up with cruel nicknames for his political enemies and often pokes fun at their appearance, he has simultaneously praised the looks of many of them.
For instance, Trump has also called California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, “good-looking” during a Cabinet meeting last year.
The president couldn’t resist complimenting Newsom’s looks, even as he criticized the governor. "You have an incompetent governor in California: Gavin. I know him very well. He's a nice guy, good-looking,” Trump said.
Newsom responded to this compliment with his own X post. "THANK YOU FOR THE KIND WORDS, LITTLE HANDS," he wrote.
Similarly, in 2024, the president gushed over “handsome” Prince William after meeting him in Paris. "He's a good-looking guy. He looked really, very handsome," Trump told the New York Post. "Some people look better in person? He looked great. He looked really nice, and I told him that."
In another bizarre interaction, President Trump claimed last month he fell “deeply in love” with Egypt’s president, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, during a meeting at a hotel.
Making his declaration of love at the G7 Summit in June, Trump recalled the moment he first fell for El-Sisi during a meeting during his first term in office. "So, he was in a hotel, and I met him, and we fell in love, deeply in love," Trump swooned, causing those around him to burst out laughing.
"And he didn't even want to see Hillary," Trump added, referring to his 2016 opponent, Hillary Clinton. Social media users were quick to comment on the clip and mock the president's words.
"It's nice that he is finally celebrating pride, though," one person posted on X. Another user was quick to point out the similarities between the Egyptian leader and the men that Trump usually gets along with.
"Breaking Trump fell in love again with another authoritarian dictator," a second person added.
"Who would've predicted the head of MAGA would end up being so vocally open about coming out!" a third person sniggered.
Likewise, earlier this year, the president paused his commencement speech to graduates at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, on Wednesday afternoon to shout out a couple of graduating cadets.
"Get up here — I want to see this guy," he said, then clapped as the cadet made his way to the stage and shook his hand. They chatted privately for a minute before the cadet left the stage.
"I hate good-looking men!" Trump exclaimed.
"There you go. Matthew, that's great. Thank you very much," he added as the cadet walked to his seat.
