Danbury's Richard Aronson killed in Newtown car crash

A driver died after his vehicle veered off a Newtown road, plunged down a steep embankment, and came to rest deep in a wooded area, authorities said.

Richard J. Aronson, of Danbury, was driving along Mt. Pleasant Road near Saw Mill Road on Tuesday, July 21, when his vehicle left the roadway, according to Newtown Police.

Officers responded to a report of a single vehicle that had gone off the road. When they arrived, they found the vehicle about 40 feet down a steep embankment off the westbound side of Mt. Pleasant Road.

Police officers and firefighters climbed down the embankment to reach the wrecked vehicle and help anyone inside. Authorities said the vehicle's passenger compartment had suffered extreme damage in the crash. Aronson was the only person in the vehicle. 

Emergency crews pulled Aronson from the vehicle and began lifesaving efforts with Newtown Ambulance and Regional Paramedics.

He was taken to Danbury Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
