A Beardsley Zoo employee was taken to the hospital after coming into contact with an electrical discharge when lightning struck near a work area, officials said.
Officials said the employee was moving a chain-link fence when lightning struck in the area on Tuesday, July 21, as severe storms moved through the region. The worker experienced contact from the electrical discharge and was taken to a local hospital out of an abundance of caution.
No serious injuries were reported, and the decision to take the employee to the hospital was out of an "abundance of caution."
"This afternoon, during the course of routine daily operations, a Connecticut Beardsley Zoo staff member was maneuvering a fence with chain link when lightning struck in the area," the zoo said in a statement. "The employee experienced contact from the electrical discharge. ... The employee is doing well, and no serious injuries were reported."
The incident came as strong storms moved across Connecticut on Tuesday, bringing down trees, causing flooding and power outages, and damaging beaches in several communities.
