Colonie Trader Joe's approved for store expansion, more parking

COLONIE - An expansive store remodel continued this week at the Trader Joe's on Wolf Road, with the storefront's former neighbors now demolished to make room for additional store space, more parking and a new entrance at the popular grocery store.

Gutting of the former Honey Baked Ham building - located in the same plaza - began in mid-May, a little over a month after the store closed in early April. Since then, permits were approved for demolition of the 3,000-square-foot building and the 6,800-square-foot space two vacant storefronts occupy within the existing Trader Joe's building, Colonie Town Supervisor Peter Crummey confirmed Wednesday. An additional "build-out permit" to renovate the store was approved, as well as signage for an additional entrance on the south side of the store that was approved by the town Tuesday night.

"They wanted an additional wall sign over the new entrance, so they're going to have two entrances now," Crummey said.

The Albany Business Review previously reported on the planned expansion.

As of Wednesday morning, both the former Honey Baked Ham building and adjoining buildings had been demolished, with the now-vacant spaces fenced off. The 13,000-square-foot store - which opened at 79 Wolf Road in 2012 - will expand an additional 2,913 square feet, Crummey said. Thirty-six new parking spots will also be added, though he said a date the renovation will be completed was not shared.

"I like reinvestment in the town of Colonie," he said. "That's exactly what I want to see here … Especially along the Wolf Road corridor."

A call and email to a Trader Joe's spokesperson have not yet been returned.
