SCHENECTADY - The summer of concert cancellations has claimed another band. The Beach Boys will no longer be surfing into Schenectady's M&T Bank Center on Aug. 1 after the legendary band postponed a portion of its current tour.
While some postponed shows will be rescheduled, M&T's commitment to hosting the home games for the Union College men's and women's hockey teams conflicts with the band's schedule for resuming the tour later in the year, prompting the venue to announce that ticket holders will receive an automatic refund in the near future.
The Beach Boys released a statement regarding the decision to postpone all shows from July 23 through September 3, citing the need for a "short break to recharge."
"Playing for you is the highlight of our summer every year - especially as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States while saluting the 60th Anniversary of 'Pet Sounds,'" reads the statement. "To keep the good vibrations going strong, we'll be taking a short break to recharge before getting back on the road in September. … Thanks for your understanding - we can't wait to see you back out there for a September to Remember."
Ticket holders for the Schenectady show are not required to do anything to receive a refund.
The Beach Boys cancellation is the latest in a series of high-profile concerts getting postponed or outright canceled in recent months. In June, R&B performers Ashanti and Trey Songz canceled their concert at the MVP Arena several days before it was scheduled due to "unforeseen circumstances," while rappers Waka Flocka Flame and French Montana each canceled shows planned for Albany venues a month earlier. Barry Manilow also postponed an MVP Arena show scheduled in April due to health concerns, but the 83-year-old singer made good on his promise to visit the Capital Region with a well-received June 29 show at the Albany venue.
The next event planned for the M&T Bank Center is an appearance by comedian and actor Martin Lawrence on his "Y'all Still Know What It Is!" tour on Aug. 8. Union College hockey games begin filling the venue's remaining calendar on Sept. 20.
