ALBANY - A building collapsed at the corner of Bradford and Ontario streets on Wednesday, sending bricks and other debris spilling into the street.
No one was injured, but the building's fall left a lot to clean up.
Fire Chief Joseph Gregory said firefighters arrived at the scene just after 9 a.m. and found a section of the sprawling building on Bradford Street had separated from the rest of the structure and collapsed. Gregory said the building's address was 135 Ontario St.
He said the building was being renovated at the time of the incident.
The chief said adjoining structures had been checked for damage and compromised utility lines. No issues were found.
He said the building has been turned over to the city's Department of Buildings and Regulatory Compliance for further assessment.
The county's tax parcel map shows that the bulk of the building's frontage is on Bradford Street.
In a June article on its website, the Albany County Land Bank Corporation said it reached a deal with developer Patrick Chiou to acquire 135 Ontario St. Chiou, the article said, also acquired neighboring 260 Bradford St. The article said both structures had fallen into disrepair in the years since it was used by a community organization, Project Strive, that encountered financial difficulties in the 2010s.
County records show both properties were sold in March 2025. Chiou did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
The article showed significant rehabilitation work had been done on 260 Bradford St.
On Wednesday, it was not immediately clear how much work had been completed on the Ontario Street property.
